Chiswick House – Turnham Green Conversation Area

Located in the sought-after Turnham Green Conservation Area in Chiswick, this period home was brimming with character — including its original staircase, which was carefully restored — yet it lacked natural light, storage and the practicality required for modern family living. Drawn to the charm of the house and its generous garden, the clients asked EMR Architecture to unlock the property’s full potential while creating a home that truly reflected their lifestyle and taste.

We secured planning permission for both a basement and a rear extension and stripped the house back to brick, enabling a complete reconfiguration. Every room was given a clear purpose so that no space was wasted, and the result is a home designed to be lived in and enjoyed every day.

The ground floor is defined by striking Crittall glazing, both externally and internally, which floods the interiors with daylight and frames views of the landscaped garden. The layout includes a welcoming double living room, a music room/home office, a shower cloakroom, and a kitchen with a generous walk-in pantry — all spaces that are both elegant and highly functional.

The new basement provides a versatile family hub: a media and games room, a gym, a sauna with shower, a utility and plant room, plus an additional WC. On the upper floors, six bedrooms (including one used as an office) sit alongside three bathrooms. The principal suite is enhanced by a spacious walk-in dressing room, combining privacy with indulgence.

Today, this Chiswick home feels practical yet effortlessly refined — filled with light, designed for family life, and reimagined as a timeless beauty in one of West London’s most desirable neighbourhoods.
