French Touch – Peterborough Conversation Area, Fulham

Situated in the Peterborough Conservation Area in Fulham, this Victorian terrace was reimagined by EMR Architecture into a home that is as light-filled as it is practical for modern family life. The brief was to respect the house’s heritage while unlocking its full potential with more space, storage and natural light.

As part of the planning process, EMR secured permission for a striking new oriel window and a set of 3.5-metre-tall doors opening directly onto the garden — dramatic design features that now define the ground floor. Inside, Crittall glazing and rooflights extend the reach of daylight, while bespoke joinery and a restored staircase give the interiors clarity and character.

The basement level was designed as a versatile guest and family zone, with a comfortable bedroom and en-suite, a guest WC, a media room and a utility. The first floor was reserved entirely for the parents, with a large principal bedroom, generous walk-in dressing room and spa-like en-suite. The second floor was created for the children, with two spacious bedrooms sharing a thoughtfully designed bathroom. At the top of the house, the loft has been converted into a flexible home office and gym corner, a private retreat above the city.

The result is a Fulham home that balances heritage and innovation, where striking new architectural elements like the oriel window and tall garden doors bring drama and light, while the carefully reconfigured interiors deliver comfort, functionality and timeless elegance.
