Inkerman House – Kensington

Situated in the cherry tree-lined Edwardes Square, within the prestigious Scarsdale and Abingdon Conservation Area in Kensington & Chelsea, EMR Architecture secured planning approval for a transformative project that reimagines a historic London home for contemporary living.

The design centres on maximising natural light and creating open, welcoming interiors. The existing lower ground floor rear extension was replaced with a carefully considered scheme, including a floor lowered by 320mm, sleek strengthened flat roof lights, and elegant Crittall-style aluminium French doors and windows. These interventions not only brought daylight into previously dark, impractical rooms but also respected the property’s heritage, blending seamlessly with the conservation area’s architectural character.

A striking double-height space was introduced at the back of the ground floor with a custom Crittall-style fixed black window, bathing the hallways, stairwell and adjoining reception rooms in natural light. The result is a sense of openness and warmth, rare for homes in central London.

At roof level, the outdated loft space was replaced with a sophisticated mansard roof and private terrace. This provides a highly coveted outdoor retreat — secluded, elegant and perfectly oriented to enjoy in the heart of Kensington.

Inside, the property underwent a full refurbishment and thoughtful reconfiguration of its layout. From circulation to bespoke joinery, every detail was designed to elevate the experience of daily living, marrying comfort with sophistication. The interiors combine practicality and modern luxury, ensuring that the house feels as functional as it is beautiful.

This project demonstrates EMR Architecture’s expertise in securing complex planning approvals within conservation areas, while delivering refined, light-filled homes that preserve heritage and embrace modern living.
