Howard’s House – Putney

In the Putney Conservation Area of South West London, EMR Architecture were appointed to design and deliver a prestigious family home for a couple with four children. The property was completely reimagined: only the original staircase was retained, while every other floor and room was reconfigured to create a house that balances character with contemporary family living.

At the rear, an exceptional extension opens the ground floor into a 65 sqm living, kitchen and dining space. Over 7-metre-wide sliding doors frame views of the garden, while a distinctive oriel window on the side captures daylight and adds architectural presence. The loft was transformed with a striking dormer — a first for the local planning authority — unlocking valuable new space.

A new garage was also built to house the family’s 10 bicycles and the plant room.

Later phases of work included the creation of a 70 sqm basement level, providing a generous media room, a guest bedroom with en-suite, a cloakroom and a wine cellar

Every element, from the kitchen to the joinery and soft furnishings, was designed bespoke by EMR to suit the family’s needs. The interiors combine practicality with refinement, ensuring the house works seamlessly for daily life while maintaining a timeless sense of style.

Howard’s House is a showcase of EMR’s ability to deliver complex projects within conservation areas, combining bold architectural interventions with finely detailed interiors to create a home that is distinctive, functional and enduring.
